Do I need a visa for China?

Pick your passport for a straight answer. Add your dates and route to check the 10-day transit rules for your exact trip.

Rules checked on 22 October 2026.

Your trip

Optional, but it lets us check the dates and the transit route.

Pick your passport to see your result.

We check it against China's 30-day visa-free entry, the 240-hour visa-free transit and Hainan's island-only policy.

Border officers make the final call. Check the official sources below and with your airline before you book.

On the 10-day transit? Check where you can go

Transit visitors can travel between 24 provinces and cities, and move between them freely. Some provinces allow only certain cities, which catches people out. Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing and Huangshan are all inside the zone, so the usual side trips from Shanghai work. With 30-day visa-free entry there is no zone to worry about.

    Before you land

    Common questions

    When does the clock start?

At midnight Beijing time after the day you arrive. Land on 20 April and your days count from 21 April, so a 10-day transit means leaving by the end of 30 April.

Does a round trip qualify for the 10-day transit?

No. Los Angeles to Shanghai to Los Angeles does not work, and nor does Sydney to Shanghai to Melbourne. Your onward ticket must go to a different country or region from the one you came from. London to Shanghai to Hong Kong does qualify.

    Will 30-day visa-free entry continue in 2027?

For 48 of the 50 countries it covers arrivals up to 31 December 2026. The current extension was announced in November 2025, and a 2027 extension is not confirmed yet. Russia is covered to 31 December 2027 and Brunei has no end date. The arrival date is what counts, so arriving on 20 December 2026 still gets you 30 days.

Can I extend my stay once I am there?

Plan on no. If your trip might run past 30 days, or past 10 days on transit, get a visa before you go.

Can I work or study visa-free?

No. Visa-free entry covers tourism, business, visiting family and friends, exchange visits and transit. Work, study and journalism need the right visa.

Do I need to fill in the arrival card before I fly?

You can, and it saves time. Since 20 November 2025 the card can be filled in online in advance through the NIA website, the NIA 12367 app or a WeChat or Alipay mini program. If you have not done it, you can still complete it at the border by scanning a QR code, on a device there or on paper. Passengers transiting within 24 hours without leaving the airport are exempt; the 10-day transit is not listed as exempt, so plan to fill it in.

What if the airline says I need a visa?

Airlines check your entry rights at check-in using IATA’s Timatic database, and a new rule can be missing or unclear there. Carry a printout of the NIA rule and your onward ticket showing a confirmed seat to a third country or region, ask the agent to re-check or to call a supervisor, and arrive early. The print button above gives you a one-page summary to show them.
