Shanghai Story Map is an English guide to Shanghai for visitors who want to know what they are looking at: where to go, the history behind individual buildings and streets, and how to get there on foot and by metro.
How it is written
Every fact has a source
Every date, name and number traces back to a listed source. Where sources disagree, we say so or leave the claim out.
Checked on foot
Opening hours, entrances and metro exits are checked on site, and each page shows when.
Our own photographs
Photos are our own unless a credit says otherwise. Where we have none yet, a page shows the name of the place, not a look-alike.
Plain history
Historical notes stay neutral and factual, using the usual terms for places and periods.
The sources page lists everything cited on the site.
Private walks
The free walks on this site can also be booked as private walks with a licensed guide. Those are run by a licensed travel agency; this website provides information and takes enquiries only.
