The story

Songjiang Mosque (松江清真寺, Sōngjiāng Qīngzhēnsì) in Songjiang District is described by English Wikipedia as the oldest mosque in Shanghai. Its older name is the Real Religion Mosque (真教寺).

Chinese Wikipedia says a Muslim darughachi (达鲁花赤, a Yuan-dynasty official) founded it in the Zhizheng era; English Wikipedia says it dates to the reign of Toghon Temür (1333–1368). It was rebuilt in 1391, expanded three times under the Ming and renovated four times in the Qing, then again in 1985, according to English Wikipedia.

The oldest part is the rear kiln hall (窑殿). Chinese Wikipedia says it dates from the Yuan, is built of brick in Arabic style with a domed interior, and is the earliest surviving Islamic building in the Shanghai area. The prayer hall in front of it was built by imperial order in 1407, with three bays, and a corridor links the two. The minaret tower has a similar form.

The grounds also contain the tomb of a Yuan-era darughachi and four steles, one dated 1677 about a rebuilding. Muslim graves once surrounded the mosque, and burials stopped in the early 1950s. The site covers about 4,900 square metres, with the gate facing north and the main buildings facing east.
