The story
The Shanghai Auto Museum (上海汽车博物馆, Shànghǎi Qìchē Bówùguǎn) at 7565 Boyuan Road in Anting is a car museum in Jiading District, in the Auto Expo Park of Shanghai International Automobile City. Go for the historic cars and the changing exhibitions. It is far out in the north-west of the city, so plan a half day. No official hours were found when this entry was written, so check ahead.
The museum opened on 17 January 2007, according to English Wikipedia, which calls it the first specialist museum of its kind in China. The building was designed by the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tongji University with IFB of Germany. It has about 28,000 square metres of floor area and roughly 10,000 square metres of exhibition space, per the same article.
The official site lists the permanent halls: the History Hall (历史馆), the Collection Hall (珍藏馆) and the Explorer Hall (探索馆), plus a car-themed reading room and temporary exhibitions. English Wikipedia says the collection includes more than 100 classic cars from nearly 50 brands across about 100 years, and that the History Pavilion holds 27 cars marking milestones in car development.
Cars the official site names include a 1964 Mercedes-Benz, a 1935 Auburn, a 1902 Peugeot Type 35, a 1964 Jaguar E-Type and a 1966 Ford Mustang GT. Temporary shows change; when the site was read it mentioned shows on classic-car engines and on world motorsport history.
Tickets are sold through the museum’s WeChat mini-program, with a Trip.com link also offered. The site gives no prices on its home page, and its Visitor Notice section was not reached.
