The story
Jinjiang Action Park (锦江乐园, Jǐnjiāng Lèyuán) was an amusement park at 201 Hongmei Road, in the southwest of Puxi, from 1985 to 2025. It is now closed. It shut on 26 January 2025, and the site is being rebuilt as a Harry Potter studio tour, due to open in 2027. There is nothing to visit there for now; for rides, go to Happy Valley Shanghai, Shanghai Disneyland, Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park or Legoland Shanghai.
The park was begun in 1984 and opened in 1985. It belonged to the Jinjiang group. Chinese Wikipedia calls it the first large amusement park built in Shanghai after 1949; it covered 113,000 square metres. The two Wikipedias even disagree on which district it was in, English Wikipedia saying Xuhui and Chinese Wikipedia saying Meilong Town in Minhang.
Its landmark was the Shanghai Ferris Wheel (上海大转盘), 108 metres tall with a 98-metre wheel, built between November 2002 and May 2003 for more than 10 million yuan. When it was finished it was described as the tallest Ferris wheel in China and the third tallest in the world. Its 63 cars each held six passengers and took 20 to 25 minutes to go round; on a clear day riders could see the Oriental Pearl Tower in Pudong, the Songpu, Fengpu and Xupu bridges over the Huangpu to the south, and Sheshan to the west.
The rest of the park was more modest: a suspended looping roller coaster, a canyon rafting ride and smaller rides. It was rated a national 4A tourist attraction in 2008, and in April 2014 it added a 51-stall night market named after Taipei’s Shilin market. Its last years were difficult. In April 2023 the park apologised to visitors because too few rides were running, and in July 2023 a power failure closed it for two days. Dismantling of the wheel began in May 2025.
On 12 February 2025 Jinjiang International and Warner Bros. Discovery announced a joint venture to turn the site into a Harry Potter studio tour, covering 53,000 square metres. Metro Line 1’s Jinjiang Park station is named after the old park.
