The story
The Hongqiao-Gubei shopping district (虹桥-古北商圈, Hóngqiáo-Gǔběi Shāngquān) covers Tianshan Road, Hongqiao Road and Gubei in western Changning. It is a place to see a long-established international residential area and its shops. It is a trip for people already in the west of the city, not a first-visit destination.
The name has changed between plans. The 2014-2020 city commercial plan called the centre New Hongqiao-Tianshan (新虹桥-天山), the new name for Changning’s earlier Hongqiao commercial centre; its January 2014 draft had listed Tianshan and New Hongqiao only as district-level centres. The 2022-2035 plan calls it Hongqiao-Gubei (虹桥-古北) and gives each main road a role: Loushanguan Road for shopping, culture and entertainment, Zunyi Road for high-end business and retail, Tianshan Road for general shopping, and Xianxia Road for business hotels.
Gubei New Area (古北新区, Gǔběi Xīnqū) was approved by Shanghai’s Construction Commission in December 1986 to complement the Hongqiao business centre. Its first phase, west of Gubei Road, was largely finished in 1995 and has European-style facades. The area covers about 1.37 square kilometres and had about 33,000 residents at the end of 2022, around 16,000 of them foreign nationals. It is described as an East Asian expatriate enclave and as Shanghai’s largest Japanese neighbourhood. Takashimaya opened there in December 2012.
The newest addition is Crystal Hongqiao (晶耀虹桥), a complex of five office buildings and retail space at Tianshan Road and Gubei Road, completed on 21 November 2025 over a Line 2 and Line 15 interchange.
Metro Line 10 (Yili Road and Shuicheng Road stations) and Line 15 (Yaohong Road and Hongbaoshi Road stations) serve Gubei.
