余联沅Yú Liányuán · d. 1901

Shanghai daotai in 1899-1900 who announced the enlarged French Concession on 27 January 1900 and signed the Mutual Protection of the Southeast.

Yu Lianyuan (余联沅, Yú Liányuán) was Shanghai daotai in 1899-1900 and signed the notice that enlarged the French Concession.

A jinshi graduate of 1877 from Xiaogan in Hubei, he became daotai in 1899. On 27 January 1900 he published the new boundary of the French Concession, agreed in earlier talks between French consul Georges Gaston Servan de Bezaure (白藻泰) and his predecessors: east to the Muddy City Creek, south to Dagangbang, west to the Guandi temple at Gujiazhai and north to Beichangbang.

When the Boxer rising broke out in 1900, the consuls held an emergency meeting on 26 June, on the French consul’s proposal. With Sheng Xuanhuai (盛宣怀) planning, Yu represented the governors-general Liu Kunyi and Zhang Zhidong in signing the Mutual Protection of the Southeast agreement and a set of regulations for protecting the settlements and city. Foreign settlements were to be protected jointly, the Yangzi valley and the Suzhou-Hangzhou area by the governors. He later moved to Hunan and became governor of Zhejiang, and died in 1901.
