Jing’an (静安, Jìng’ān) is named after Jing’an Temple, the rebuilt Buddhist temple that stands among shopping towers on West Nanjing Road. The road is one of the city’s main shopping streets, and most of this area’s hotels are on or near it.
What to see
The temple is the one sight right on the main road. South of the shopping strip is Moller Villa, a Nordic-style garden villa that is now a hotel. North of the shopping strip, the Shanghai Natural History Museum sits in Jing’an Sculpture Park.
Further north the area runs to Suzhou Creek, where the old industrial bank of the creek has been turned to new uses. M50 is a former textile mill full of galleries; next to it is the terraced, tree-topped 1000 Trees. Downstream, the Sihang Warehouse holds a free memorial hall about the fighting of October 1937. The Jade Buddha Temple is a short taxi ride west of M50.
Getting around
The temple and the shopping street are on the metro. The creek-side sights are a longer walk north, or a short taxi ride; plan them as a separate half-day.
